New Library for Steyning Primary School
Steyning CofE Primary School is really excited about their new library that was installed in just one day by Book Space. The Friends of Steyning Primary School (PTA) involves all the parents and carers of the children attending the school and they have been collectively raising funds for all kinds of school equipment, from cake sales to an amazing yearly firework display. Sue Light and her committee along with former head teacher, Chris Luckin, voted on the child friendly furnishing and vibrant colours of green and purple. Jack and Fred of the School Council commented, 'It's a new, fresh, modern design.'
The opening of the new library took place after the school day on 22nd March and was attended by sponsors, children, teachers and Friends.
The local businesses in Steyning are extremely supportive of the school. Stuart Osborn of Osborn Humphreys Estate Agents and Lin Brough, Flicker Rose gift shop, are just two of the schools supporters and in particular, have generously sponsored the new library. Their donations have enabled the school to purchase additional shelving and enhanced the overall look and aims of the project.
"Steyning Primary School is central to our local community and we're delighted to offer our support", said Stuart Osborn, Principal, Osborn Humphreys Estate Agents. He added, "The new library is a fantastic development which I'm sure will be enjoyed by both the current and future pupils."
The opening of the library attracted a lot of interest! Sara Bowers, owner of The Steyning Book Shop attended and has been massively involved with the school by organising numerous writers to visit the children and share with them their fantastic stories.
The school very much appreciated a visit from the highly acclaimed 'Gruffalo' writer, Julia Donaldson along with her husband, Malcolm, one of the school Governors.
'I'm a great fan of libraries', commented Julia, - 'the places where children can discover their favourite books and writers and go on to be the readers of the future. I've visited a lot of primary schools without libraries and others where - showing great initiative - the library was in a converted classroom or cupboard! So it was wonderful to see a spacious re-designed Steyning Primary library, with its attractive fresh colour scheme and welcoming atmosphere. Chris Luckin, the now retired head, has done a great job helping to create it, and I'm sure the incoming head will enjoy the challenge of running and expanding it.'
The Junior Friends of Steyning Primary School, run by Sarah Liddiard, teaching assistant, have also contributed to numerous school projects and also regularly donate funds to a charity of their choice. Junior Friends, Emmy and Violet love the 'colourful, cosy place to read and the friendly, comforting atmosphere.'
Jacqui Gould, Higher Level Teaching Assistant, has put in an enormous amount of time and effort to ensure that the library has an ever changing stock of books.
"In these days of Information Technology, it is essential that children have the opportunity to understand the purpose and flexibility of a vibrant library. Thanks to the efforts of many, this is what we have created. The children asked for a comfortable place to read - they are very excited by what they have achieved," said Chris Luckin.
